Marriage Visa (Spouse Visa)
Marriage to a British Citizen
You may apply for a Marriage Visa (also known as a Spouse Visa) if you are married to a British subject, or a person who has settlement in the UK (ILR), or right of abode. A UK Marriage Visa is issued for a 2 year probationary period which allows you to work without restriction, as well as exit and re-enter the UK as you wish.
At the end of the probationary period you are required to provide evidence to the Home Office that you have lived together for the 2 year period. At this time you may be eligible to apply for ILR based on the evidence you give, which includes but is not limited to, you and your spouse showing that you intend to live together permanently as man and wife and that you are able to support yourselves and any dependant children.
If the marriage has already lasted for four years or more, permanent residence will usually be approved straight away.
